California governor Jerry Brown signed landmark legislation Thursday that mandates the contributions of LGBT people be included in school lesson plans.

The bill was introduced by gay state senator Mark Leno. His aim was to help combat gay bullying by showing that gays have contributed to California.
But there is something else that is as important in this law:
It adds sexual orientation to the state's existing antidiscrimination protections that prohibit bias in school activities, instruction, and instructional materials.
Mark Leno's response:
"Today we are making history in California by ensuring that our textbooks and instructional materials no longer exclude the contributions of LGBT Americans," Leno, a San Francisco Democrat, said in a statement. "Denying LGBT people their rightful place in history gives our young people an inaccurate and incomplete view of the world around them."

Update:
Governor Brown's statement:
"History should be honest. This bill revises existing laws that prohibit discrimination in education and ensures that the important contributions of Americans from all backgrounds and walks of life are included in our history books. It represents an important step forward for our state, and I thank Senator Leno for his hard work on this historic legislation."
And here is the bigot's response:
The governor’s decision was criticized by Benjamin Lopez of the Anaheim-based Traditional Values Coalition, who said the schools should be focusing on doing better on important skills such as reading, writing and math.
"It’s a sad day for the state of California,’’ said Lopez, legislative analyst and advocate for the group. "We have failed at our core educational mission and yet we are now going to inject gay studies into the classrooms. Its absurd and offensive.’’
No Mr Lopez... whats offensive is everything that you stand for. Intolerance and hatred towards your fellow human beings just because of whom they love. And you are deliberately mischaractising the bill to spread fear and hatred amongst the ignorant so you can benefit from it.
Fuck you.
