There are many things that divide this site right now: whether we should be Obama supporters or not, for example. Or what direction the sun rises from.
But one thing should unite all of us: we desperately want the GOP to begin impeachment proceedings against President Barack Obama.
The scenario is excellent for both Obama opponents and Obama supporters.
Obama opponents:
One of our main critiques is that Barack Obama will bend over backwards to meet the GOP halfway, and is astonishingly regressive in areas of policy where the GOP is not relevant. This helps us twice over! Obama will spend months in pointless negotiations where he offers to let Sarah Palin be President on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, and promises to never veto a bill with a Republican co-sponsor. Meanwhile, the GOP will charge forward with the most racist-ass thing they've done since dancing a jig on New Orleans's flooded foundations. Obama will be neutralized while the GOP will be brutalized. And Obama will find it even more difficult than he did previously to find GOP cover to gut Social Security.
Obama supporters:
Since Obama is waiting until 2013 to deploy his Progressive wings, this will give him the perfect opportunity to draw the contrast between himself and the Republicans which politics have denied him thus far. With the opportunity to decry GOP racism and create a new politics of hope, Obama can engage in a Mr. Smith Goes To Washington moment, destroying the Republican Party for a generation. Meanwhile, the massive Democratic majorities that Congress will enjoy as a result of the spectacle will allow Obama to implement the impossible Public Option, free Don Siegelman, close Guantanamo, and end the War on Drugs.
In both cases, the GOP impeachment of Clinton will be implicitly de-legitimized. They just impeach everyone they lose to.
So, I think I can speak for the entire Daily Kos community in response to the GOP impeachment threat: Please, for the love of all that is holy, do not throw us in that briar patch, Br'er Wolf.
