The biggest threat to Democratic, and President Obama's, election chances are the anti-democratic "voter fraud" laws that are sweeping the country in just about every Republican controlled state, including important swing states.
Seems like just the thing for the Justice Department to begin to take aggressive action on, especially with an important election just around the corner. Sadly, however, like in just about every other area that requires aggressive prosecution, the Obama Administration and Eric Holder's stodgy white-shoe Department of Justice have been asleep at the wheel. Except whistleblowers and leakers, of course. They've been all over that like white on rice.
Ben Jealous at the NAACP called these new laws "Jim Crow." Rep. Maxine Waters called these new laws "Jim Crow." Bill Clinton called these new laws "Jim Crow." The Congressional Black Caucus has spoken out.
If only we had an African-American President and Attorney-General who had the power to crack down....eh..uh. Sorry.
Okay. So now the Congressional Democrats have written a sternly worded letter urging action. TPM has a nifty roundupof the whole issue.
The bottom line is this: The Justice Department should start tying up these laws in court and winning some preliminary injunctions against their implementation. They need to look at the calendar and start suing.
