This will be a very short diary because I only want to point out what should be a well known fact among people who follow the news, but apparently isn't.
US Attorneys are recommended by the US Senators from the state in which they will serve. The President then nominates the US Attorney pre-selected by the state's Senate delegation.
If both Senators are Republicans, obviously they will choose a Republican US Attorney nominee. If both Senators are Democrats, they obviously will choose a Democratic US Attorney. In both cases, this often leads to a pie fight within the party over whose name will be forwarded to the President.
If the state's Senate delegation is split between the parties, then the President has room to choose a US Attorney from his own party.
Utah presently has two Republican US Senators, Senator Orrin Hatch, and Senator Mike Lee. They obviously forwarded a Republican to the administration for nomination.
If you have been following the course of appointments of US Attorneys by the administration in Republican controlled states, this has been standard procedure, just as it has been for past presidents.
If you are outraged that President Obama has chosen a Republican US Attorney, you should direct your outrage at this tradition, not at the administration. On the other hand, if you want this tradition to end, don't be surprised if a future Republican president nominates Republican US Attorneys to states like New York or Massachusetts.
Now please return to your regularly scheduled hysteria.
