This will be a short Diary - it will most likely get pushed off the "recent diaries" list before long - but I'm hoping this info can start getting passed around via blogs or word of mouth.
Just so everyone is clear - I'm not associated with the project I'm about to tell you about - but it's a good idea, the money is going to the right places, and it's something even those of us on tight budgets can do.
A school here in Tucson has decided to help raise money for the victims of the shooting (including families of those who died, and those who survived) by selling 1-8-11 bracelets. This is a project that was come up with completely by the students who felt like they needed to help.
the reason they felt so compelled? Christina Green, the 9 year old girl who died in the attack, went to school in Ironwood Ride High School's district.
the bracelts are similar to the livestrong bracelets that everyone seemed to wear for a while. They are simple, white, have 1-8-11 inscribed on them, and are cheap.
A local tv station - KVOA - has put together a victims fund, with every single dollar going to the victims. (there is no overhead because it's donated, and the station is taking none of the money as well).
All of the money raise from the bracelet sales will go to the victims fund.
Here is how you can help - the bracelets can be sold over the phone, and the school is willing to mail them anywhere in the country.
If you want to donate HERE is the link to the KVOA page about the bracelets.
Here is the information about the KVOA victims fund in case you want it as well. If you don't want a bracelet, there is info there on how to simply donate to the fund through the LOCAL/COMMUNITY banks that have decided to help out.
Here is the school's page about the bracelets, including a phone number to call if you want to order one (or more).
Right now the bracelts are just $1.50. That includes postage. So buy a couple and give them out to friends. Buy a whole bunch and sell them in your community. Or just buy one and wear it and feel good about yourself.
Once again - I know this is most likely now Rec list worthy, but please pass the info on. Medical/funeral bills pile up fast, and every dollar helps.
