We in Florida know that we're in for a very long two years, what with Rick "Medicare Fraud" Scott in the governor's mansion and Republicans having more than a 2/3 majority in both the House and Senate.
And like their counterparts in Washington DC, who claim their focus is on creating jobs and cutting spending, their actions are just the opposite.
The latest lunacy...a bill filed today to grant a sales tax holiday for the puchase of firearms.
Follow me below the fold for the gruesome details.
Sales Tax holidays are a tradition in Florida. Every year there is one for school supplies before kids head back to school. And every year there is an attempt to add to this list.
Florida is facing a projected deficit of over $3.5 billion in the coming year, so what makes sense to Republicans in Tallahassee? A sales tax holiday!
State Representative J. W. Grant, a Republican from Tampa, today introduced house bill 461, which says "Specifies period during which sales of firearms are exempt from such tax". The bill (link here) would exempt from the Florida sales tax any firearms sold on October 1 or October 2 of 2011.
While there is no estimate of the cost of this exemption, in light of Florida growing financial mess and in light of recent events in Arizona, this seems to push Florida to the top of the "loon" list, in my opinion.
