If there was ever any doubt that the tea party has no business calling itself patriotic, we got it earlier today. Denver-area teabagger Melissa Brookstone posted a message on Tea Party Nation's messageboard calling for small businesses to stop hiring in order to take a stand against the Obama administration (h/t to PFAW's Right Wing Watch).
This post is absolutely breathtaking in its unhinged nature. It makes the usual teabagger claims that Obama and the Democrats are ushering in socialism. Supposedly, Obama and the Senate are in cahoots with Hollywood, the media and the Occupy movement to destroy free enterprise. It then calls for small business owners to stop hiring until "this war against business and my country is stopped."
So let's get this straight. These people claim to be uberpatriots, and now they want to sabotage the economy? The mind reels.
Update: Since this made the rec list, I thought I'd share some of the comments other Tea Party Nation members have made. Pretty revealing stuff--more after the jump.
Some of the replies to Brookstone's post offer a pretty revealing look into the nature of the teabagger movement. And I thought a visit to Freeperville was eyepopping.
Way ahead of you. I haven't hired anyone since Obama got into office, especially after he and Bush fathered the first stimulus. Anyone with an Obama sticker on their vehicle might as well keep on driving.
This doesn't go far enough. According to the dictionary, a strike means "a refusal by employees to work." As business owners, we are employees of the American people, ostensibly working in our businesses for wages paid to us by our customers. Therefore, a strike by we, the business owners, means to shut the doors for a certain period of time. Threatening not to hire does nothing. Ceasing to provide goods and services would hit hard. I realize that it would hit us in the pocketbook, but taking a visable stand usually does. If small and large businesses alike would just shutter their doors, this bunch of morons in the government and on the picket line would have to take notice and it wouldn't take long for the to yell, "uncle."
If this is a movement for global socialism, then it is an act to destroy this Republic. That is an act of war and demands more than a strike.
Reminiscent of the old Sunday Blue Laws: Why not shut down one day a week? Like on Mondays...Blue Mondays we'll call them. When people can't buy gasoline, food, and cellphones on Monday, maybe they'll get it into their heads that we are united, and we are strong.
Somebody get an archive of this ... make sure this can be tied around the teabaggers' necks next year.
