The U.K. just passed a resolution declaring itself an Anglo-Saxon state. This has been in the making for some time, however.
If you will remember a year and a half ago Gordon Brown - rightly - called a British voter a bigot:
Brown replied: "But they shouldn't be doing that, there is no life on the dole for people any more. If you are unemployed you've got to go back to work. It's six months…"
Duffy interjected: "You can't say anything about the immigrants because you're saying that you're … but all these eastern European what are coming in, where are they flocking from?"
Brown said that although there were 1 million immigrants to Europe from Britain, there were also 1 million Britons who had moved to Europe.
At the end of the exchange Brown said: "Good to see you. Thanks very much." He got in the car and seconds later is heard saying: "That was a disaster," before calling Duffy "bigoted".
Unfortunately for Brown, most of the country agreed with her, and he ended up losing to David Cameron's conservative party. More recently Cameron has gone around the country speaking of the necessity of establishing the U.K. as an Anglo-Saxon nation, so that the Anglo-Saxon culture is protected.
The Anglican Church has dutifully taken up the cause. They have gone even farther and tried to segregate Celtic and immigrant children from Anglo-Saxon children in parochial schools. Fortunately, the Supreme Court forced the Anglican Church to integrate their schools.
This court ruling, however, has only emboldened the far right political forces in Parliament. Cameron was able to convince his ruling coalition in Parliament to pass a resolution declaring the U.K. an Anglo-Saxon state. And yesterday they did just that.
Secretary of State William Hague has proposed taking it a step further and making all citizens sign a loyalty oath to the U.K, declaring it an Anglo-Saxon state. Immigrant and Celtic groups have cried foul, calling it racist and saying it is offensive to those that don't identify as Anglo-Saxon but still want to identify themselves as British. As a result, there has been some resistance to this proposal, but observers note that it is only a matter of time before this passes because of the growing influence of the far right among the British electorate.
