I didn't move my bank account today. Yes, I'm a slacker. Though I'll be doing it in the not very distant future. Unfortunately it takes a bit more to move my accounts than just walking into BofA, getting a check and heading to the local credit union.
Once I have new accounts open (on Monday) I can get the direct deposit stuff dealth with at work. That could take a couple of weeks, depending on how quickly my company's people are. THEN I can tell BofA that I want nothing to do with them anymore. Not that I'll be able to move ALL of my banking away from them since they own my mortgage.
I don't have a BofA mortgage by choice. When I refinanced the house a while back, the note got sold about a half dozen times and eventually ended up in Countrywide's stable. Shortly thereafter they were absorbed into BofA.
Yes, I know about the whole refinance thing. While I do still have equity left, I don't have enough to go to a different financial institution and get it done. What I was able to do was get BofA to do the refi to a pretty damn low interest rate. So, while I'll still be giving them money at least it will be far less money. I guess they're pretty desperate to keep the mortgage customers that can still afford to pay and are still willing to do so.
So, any tips on a good credit union in the San Jose, CA area? There are a couple near my house but I haven't yet looked into them closely. Any opinions will be greatly appreciated.
Mon Nov 14, 2011 at 10:39 PM PT: The majority of my cash has finally made its way out of BofA and into my new accounts at Patelco Credit Union. Hubby got added to the account today and we're just waiting for the box of checks to arrive to close out what's left at BofA. I'm looking at what I can do to move my mortgage away from them as well, but that's a longer term project, unfortunately.
