I am a part of Parents for Occupy Wall St., and we'll be discussing our goals and much more tomorrow morning at (11/12/11) at 11 am in the Atrium. All are welcome.
The Occupation is constantly called upon to answer the question "What are their demands?" I refuse to accept this terminology. "Demands" implies a situation where we have an excess of leverage or perhaps even a hostage. This is absurd. We have no leverage over our government, and if anyone is being held hostage it is the 99%.
So I choose to reframe that question whenevert I answer it by starting out with "My goals are..." and finishing up with my little Dream List of reforms and actions to restore public faith in our system of government.
- An end to Corporate Personhood.
- A subpoena-empowered truth commission chosen by the Occupation to investigate the financial-collapse and other crimes relating to corporate interference in government, chaired by Glenn Greenwald and Naomi Klein. All testimony would be open to the public.
- Public financing of elections.
There are of course more things I'd like to see changed, but these are the ones that I feel we can all really get behind or at least start from. What are your goals?
