That is my new motto for the United States.
Can someone please translate it into Latin for me, accurately? (I think the word sementem will be involved, for all you Beavises and Buttheads out there)
It can mean what you want it to mean, of course, which is desirable in any self-respecting motto.
But I think it captures several unfortunate features of our modern Republic, or at least our modern Republicans who seem to play such a central role in setting its agenda:
* that cutting taxes, then maintaining lowest-in-generations taxes, while engaging in two very high-tech, ultra-expensive, record-breakingly-long wars halfway around the world (putting aside for the moment their wisdom), is no problem;
* that we don't need to invest in clean energy, or transportation infrastructure, or do anything serious about climate change, even though those of us with have a brain know it's happening, with a vengeance;
* that we can slash education at all levels, even as the world becomes more technologically sophisticated at all levels, as strains on resources pose new existential threats to us, and as we are faced with every tougher international economic competition.
There is an obdurate myopia to these things -- almost as if some of us don't expect to be around very long. Hence my motto.
PS: First diary on DK4 -- thought I'd start out dark.
