A few months back, you likely heard about a vitally important court case involving the prosecution of a principled young environmental activist named Tim DeChristopher. After several delays, that trial is back on and we are asking for your support on its openings days starting February 28th.
So what is all the fuss about?
Tim—“Bidder 70”—pulled off one of the most creative protests against our runaway energy policy in years: he bid for the oil and gas leases on several parcels of federal land even though he had no money to pay for them, thus upending the auction. The government calls that “violating the Federal Onshore Oil and Gas Leasing Reform Act” and thinks he should spend ten years in jail for the crime; we call it a noble act, a profound gesture made on behalf of all of us and of the future.
The looming trial is coming up in a week, and we need to stand in solidarity of a young man who took a stand, drew a line in the tar sand, and said Enough! to the rich robber barons of the dirty fuel industry.
He now faces the wrath of the US Justice Department, who is doing the dirty work for the angry rich men who wanted a quick, cheap land grab in the sunset of the Dubya years, but were thwarted by a clever college student.
Tim now faces up to ten years in prison, and a $500,000 fine.
People who care about justice should get active about this case.
People who care about climate change should get active about this case.
People who care about protecting pristine public lands should get active about this case.
And one more thing, Tim is a Kossack.
If you can contribute money to help make the week’s events possible, please click here . But more than your money we need your body, your brains, and your heart. In a landscape of little water, where redrock canyons rise upward like praying hands, we can offer our solidarity to the wild: wild lands and wild hearts.
Tim DeChristopher deserves and needs our physical and spiritual support in the name of a just and vibrant community. Thank you for standing with us,
Dr. James Hansen,
Naomi Klein,
Bill McKibben,
Robert Redford,
Terry Tempest Williams

Tim has been denied the necessity defense, arguing that he had derailed the auction for the greater good of tackling runaway climate change. In 2008, activists from Greenpeace UK used a similar defense successfully and were acquitted when the jury decided that the threat of global warming justified breaking the law.

"The more I got involved (in the political process) the more I realized you can't change the system from within the system," DeChristopher says. "The rules are set up to protect the status quo. … Every great step forward (in the history of America) has taken civil disobedience."

SING.
Yes, Sing! -

If you gather to demonstrate your joy and resolve in song, please think about doing it somewhere that is meaningful to the healthy and just world you want to see. Find a space in your community that is occupied by a root cause of the climate crisis–gather where greed and injustice are flourishing, and sing them out of there. Instead of protest–replace.
