Everyone knows that Paul Ryan's budget will never be passed. It's understood, matter of fact, that Ryan is just laying down a far right marker for future negotiations. Unless the Democrats release a counter plan to Ryan's (and soon), the negotiations will begin with the current center right position (and it is center right, the American social safety net is one of the skimpiest in the modern world), and meet somewhere between what we have now and Ryan's radical agenda.
So here is the question, what would we like to see in this Democratic legislation?
How about:
Single payer healthcare
Rolling back the military budget to Clinton era levels (which likely means ending all 3 wars)
Ending all Bush era tax cuts
Creating a billionaire's tax (did you know that tax rates on upper incomes during the Eisenhower era were 90%? This forced the ultra rich to put their money to work rather than hoarding it in offshore accounts)
Ending all abstinence only sex education programs
Cutting back on farm subsidies
There's lots more of course. Naturally, I don't expect Democrats to actually be proactive since cringing, cowering and playing defense is apparently more rewarding but maybe with a little pressure.....?
