Principle #2 (of a series)
Science Guides our Thinking
Why should progressives associate themselves strongly with science?
Because scientific evidence is the best guide we mortals have to operate within this reality. Science has shown us how to get space probes to Mars and sequence the human genome, build computers and Iphones and GPS devices and proved that the world is not flat.
The scientific principle will only accept hard demonstrable, repeatable evidence. We progressives need to operate from a base of truth and reality to be relevant. It seems that the other political side is skeptical or soft about the value of science. You know "the earth is 6,000 years old, evolution is only a theory and the world's glaciers are disappearing due to "sun spots" crowd.
What does science have to do with political philosophy?
Being "Progressive" means that one is seeking progress on all levels. It means that we continue to learn new things and let go of old ideas that do not pass the repeatable, hard evidence tests. I know this devotion to scientific thinking stirs up a lot of dust with literal interpreters of holy books and religions that want us not to question the way they serve up reality but I stand with science none the less. I'm not against faith and religion, just the closed minded dogma.
Are their other reasons to associate the "Progressive" movement with science?
Yes because the average person knows that the world is not flat and that science and critical thinking have brought us all of this marvelous technology. Our stand is not very controversial with most people and quite easy to digest and defend. In the long run, truth wins and if we want our philosophy to stand the test of time it must be based solidly on what is. It might even attract some smart people to our side of the street.
