One of the major aspect of the current budget battle that is being overlooked is the effect on the men and women in the armed forces. Through a cruel twist of fate, for some reason a soldier serving our country in a time of war is not considered essential. While they will recover their missed pay period when the budget is finally passed, this does little for their families back home, some of who live paycheck to paycheck.
It is absurd that the GOP has so much disrespect for our soldiers, fighting for flag and country, that they are willing to force their families to go without comfort for a few weeks so the GOP can score some petty political point.
Sure, the Congress will still get paid, but any soldier will only get paid for April 1 to 8 for their April 1 to 15 pay period. If this fiasco lasts longer, then our soldiers will have to wait longer for all their back pay.
This should always be unacceptable, but when they are in theater, it becomes the height of base politics. The GOP is about to pull the most unpatriotic maneuver in the history of our country.
The GOP is going to disrespect our soldiers, calling their daily sacrifice non-essential, just to please their Tea Party base.
I am against the wars, but I will be the first salute my fellow citizens who choose to fight for liberty, flag and the American way. It shall be the shame of the GOP that they view the work of our soldiers as worthless, or at least not worth a paycheck.
