I lurk at a site called Raptureforums where evangelical Christians of the conservative and mean-to-poor-people stripe discuss the upcoming End of the World and all the petty politics that would be meaningless if it arrived.
As many others have noted, a religious group has been buying massive ad space to advise us that the Rapture will begin next week.
And in a spate of delicious irony, the Rapture fans at Raptureforum are pissed that someone else would announce what they themselves have been announcing for years. The reason they are pissed is that they know that like every previous prediction of The Rapture, this will come and go without fulfillment, and people will be further turned off by people predicting The Rapture, such as an entire website dedicated to predicting the Rapture, but without a specific date.
So the people who say the Rapture is coming are angry that anyone else would make the same prediction.
The "Christianity" of the forum is tempered by the conservative, hate-filled political views. Birthers were prominent until recently, and "Obamacare" is a pejorative.
Although I am an atheist, I am well read on religion. I am often tempted to join and start posting about how Jesus said we should share with the poor rather than blame them for society's ills and that it is our "Christian" duty to to provide health care to all. "Inasmuch as ye have done it to the least of these, my brethren...etc."
If you click the link, they will probably track back to this diary, and it is barely possible that some of them might read other items posted here and learn something about compassion.
Nah.
