The coastal steamer line united Norwegians who were locked in by weather, mountains and fjords. For over a century, they have sailed the 1,500 miles from North to South and back, several steamers covering the route, ensuring that one arrives at each harbor daily.
The national broadcaster decided to film the entire 134 hour journey, and to broadcast it live by satellite. Norway, and the world, has become captivated by the transmission. It is even being shown on large street screens in Japan.
The 24 hour daylight creates for amazing scenes in the middle of the night - earlier today the steamer passed the Polar Circle, and from now on the sun will remain above the horizon.
What has captivated people is the spirit shown by people along the route. They are in boats, along the shore, on islands, in front of their houses, waving flags and banners, and gathering at the stops. You can follow the journey through the web.
