Hi. My name is Dawn. I am NOT an urban homesteader. I am at best, a wannabe Urban Homesteader. If it were not for my husband, whom I love more than anything, I'd be up to my eyeballs in chickens and squash. I'd be walking harness trained dwarf goats through my neighborhood instead of a dog. I'd turn my front yard into an herb garden.
But, like water dripping from a fountain, I am slowly opening that stubborn seal against agriculture my husband has. This September I'm getting a pair of rabbits for breeding and I'm conspiring to try and start up my vegetable garden again next year (maybe even building a greenhouse out there becuase I swear to God if I lose one more garden to hail...) and I have cherry trees in my back yard that produces the most delightful tartish pie cherries, if we can get to them before the birds and squirrels do.
Urban Homesteading is the next, great people powered movement. As economic fortunes continue to decline and as the middle class continues to dwindle, more emphasis will be paid on people growing their own food in the U.S. (and in many cases, growing BETTER food).
But Urban Homesteading is more than just growing your own food. It's based on frugal living techniques. "Use it up and wear it out". It's about finding innovative solutions to common problems. It's about making your property work for you, instead of just you working for your property. And even if that property is a tiny apartment patio, there are still several things that can be done to make what you do have, productive.
So join me as I research and explore different agricultural methods that can provide you with both food and enjoyment.
