Should Obama save the Democratic party and the country by not seeking re-election? what if he made such announcement?
What if President Obama announced, like President Johnson on March 31, 1968,
“with America's future under challenge right here at home”
and my inability to end polarization in the country and achieve my goals,
“I shall not seek, and I will not accept, the nomination of my party for another term as your President.”
Of course, this is far fetched, and not likely to happen. But, should President Obama do it to save our country from the right-wing takeover? Increasingly Mr. Obama’s re-election prospects are dwindling. Should he sacrifice his own ego to help the Democratic party chose someone else who has better chances of getting elected against Romney, Perry, Bush, etc. (Don’t be surprised who may get in if Obama is perceived weak.) Could Hillary beat any of them?
Fox News and the conmen are going to spend all their time and energy on personal attacks on Obama. So if the above announcement comes very late in the game Democrats will have a big advantage. They can even blame the opposition for Obama’s quitting and our economic problems. In short, there is not much downside to this scenario, except Obama wouldn’t do it. He, probably, doesn’t want to be called a quitter and a coward.
I don’t have big problems with Obama’s job performance, considering the limitations within which he had to work. He could have done things differently, but who could have guaranteed desired results. However, most people, of all political persuasions, are mad at Obama. So why not save the Democratic Party and the country by not running again?
On the day when the markets are panicky and everyone is on the edge, just the thought of Obama sticking it to the Republicans brings a smile on my face.
