Well today was day 3 of my solitary peaceful protest. I stood on my neighborhood corner with different signs each day trying to get my voice heard since my vote doesn't count in conservative country and I don't have any money for a lobbyist.
To my total surprise, yesterday the 2 gentlemen students brought with them 3 other people to help with the protest. They were enthusiastic and very kind and friendly. We managed to stay out for a couple of hours. (It was hot.) Through those students, I found out that the OccupyWallStreet movement is starting to spread through BSU slowly but surely. The facebook page is up and the first meeting is on Friday.
Today they had other responsibilities which I was expecting so I was out by myself for most of the time. Just before I left my corner, a very nice young mother stopped to introduce herself and let me know about the facebook page. Another totally pleasant surprise.
One thing I have learned from this experience, is that protesting is a lot harder than it looks. My feet hurt, my hands cramp, my lower back hurts and my eyes are irritated from the fumes. I had to keep reminding myself of the Arab Spring where people are getting killed so that I will stop whining to myself. For me, this is NOT fun. But when those other supporters showed up, I found I could go on longer. And I will always try to give some consideration to anyone who has the initiative to stand up for their cause. It ain't easy.
I also learned that there are a lot nicer people out there than the impression media gives us. Yet even in this conservative city, I at least got acknowledgement from some of the drivers. That was nice. So I am living proof that one person can make a difference. Even if only to connect with other people to make the world a little better place.
