Although everyone is super-focused on the Iowa caucuses today, something else of great import happened here, too.
On Friday, I posted a frantic plea for help. I had three days to come up with $2,000 or be evicted. I'd never done anything like it, and surely hope I won't ever have to do it again. Everyone here was kind and helpful, from setting up the Paypal stuff to donating that prodigious amount of money, and then some. On Saturday, I posted a thank you and reported the final total.
When I called my landlord on Monday to report that the money had been transferred, but might not be there before the court hearing, he was adamant that I'd have to see the judge. I'd sent him copies of every screen of the withdrawal transaction from Paypal to my credit union, but he'd only accept cash in hand.
I talked to a friend last night to ask for a loan until Friday or Monday, when the funds were sure to be there. Not only did she agree to that, but she drove me to the credit union this morning to deposit the check. Imagine my horror when the credit union said that because the amount was over a thousand, they'd have to hold it for three business days! Despite my near-cardiac arrest, I asked her to give me the balance on my accounts. She told me the checking $$, which wasn't near enough, and then said that there was $1,636.72 available in savings! Not only did you all come through, but so did Paypal. That $$ was there bright and early the first day after a holiday weekend! I don't know what happened to the 3-5 day waiting/processing period, but that money was THERE! Other people may not have had the same experience with Paypal, but I am truly impressed!
I gave the check back to my friend and came home to call the landlord. Everything is fine, I didn't have to take my poor congested head and lungs on a bus-and-walking trek to the courthouse in cold weather, and I find myself here again, thanking you all! My friend wanted to go to breakfast this morning, but the timing was off – I HAD to get the money to him before court. She's taking me to the store on Thursday, and I will treat us both to breakfast in your name. When I feel human again, I'll get that dinner and bottle of wine. Thank you all again and again! This is the best birthday eve (out of 62 of them) I've ever had! :-)
