Sen. Roy Blunt, committed to taking away your birth control (Jonathan Ernst/Reuters)
After the
narrow defeat of Sen. Roy Blunt's amendment to allow employers to deny insurance coverage for a variety of preventive health care services, but most directly birth control, Blunt is
determined to keep up the fight.
“This fight is not over,” said Senate GOP Conference Vice Chair Roy Blunt (R-MO), the author of the amendment that was tabled 51-48 on Thursday. “I will continue to work with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle and in both chambers of Congress to protect the rights that make our nation great.”
That's pretty much the
message coming from House Speaker John Boehner, too, proving that the tiny, extremist GOP base has inordinate power over GOP leadership, who seems to be
increasingly aware that they've become rimrocked, unable to abandon the effort after creating such a huge stink, and knowing that continuing it could lead to electoral disaster.
The continued assist they're getting from Rush Limbaugh isn't going to be helping them at all in trying to convince America that this fight isn't about women's health care. That claim has been laughable from the beginning, but after Limbaugh's tirades is just pathetic.
