Last night (3am) my wife and I finished watching the first season of Downton Abbey. I am supposed to be working right now (noon) but I am about to start the second season, because there is no goddamn way I can wait to find out what happens next! But before I start season two, I have to ask one question to those of you who have watched this show.
Is there something wrong with me that I love Downton Abbey? If feels like there must be something wrong with me if I love this show. I love shows like Deadwood and Game of Thrones and John Adams. Shows with great characters and great stories, but also with a lot of horrible violence. The most violent thing that happens on Downton Abbey involved a bar of soap. Actually, the bar of soap was probably the most awful thing I have even seen... even though it happened off camera.
Okay, so, there are actually some redeeming qualities to Downton Abbey. I mean, the cook IS always yelling at Daisy. The footman guy is a real dick. Two of the sisters are first class Mean Girls. Professor McGonagall thought about having an ambassador assassinated. But then she turned around at let the old guy win the flower contest, so, in the end she's now really a hard ass through and through. So, even with some redeeming qualities, I should still hate this show.
I mean, last night I cared that the maid was hired for a secretary job, goddamnit!! I felt an emotion when Matthew walked away from Mary because she didn't tell him whether she was wanted to marry him the day she got back from her trip, because he assumes that she only wants to marry him to save her inheritance. A guy died as she was losing her virginity to him and she's afraid to tell you, you stupid asshole!!
See, see what I just did right there! There MUST be something wrong with me. It can't be natural that I love this show. I don't love this show. I don't even like it. I hate it! I hate Downton Abbey!
Oh, I have to go now, my wife wants to get started with season two.
Okay, so, maybe she's busy online right now and I want to get started with season two, but... but... but...
Oh, thank you, SNL. Mocking this show makes me feel less threatened by how much I love it. I mean hate it!
