That's right. According to his long-time friend Joe Oliver, George Zimmerman is just as dead as Trayvon Martin, the unarmed teenager he shot to death a month ago today. That's the reason he would tell Martin's family that he is "very, very sorry."
Not sorry because he climbed out of his truck dressed in a hoodie to check out a kid dressed in a hoodie. Not sorry because he kept following him after a police dispatcher told him not to. Not sorry that he violated rules in the Neighborhood Watch Manual warning patrol members not to confront or follow people they suspect of criminal behavior and not to carry a weapon. Not sorry because he muttered a recorded racial slur and made other disparaging remarks about someone based on his attire and skin color. Rather, sorry because his life is now over.
And, oh, by the way, says Oliver, he didn't say "fuckin' coons," but rather "fuckin' goons," which he says his high school-aged daughter claims is a "term of endearment" among young people these days. Puhleez.
George Zimmerman's life isn't over. He's breathing, eating and protected by the Sanford Police Department. He's got Oliver and his lawyer's PR campaign defending him on television. And if he gets charged for feloniously shooting a kid armed with iced tea and Skittles, he can be sure he'll have a good defense team to tell his side of the story and raise every possible doubt about what kind of person that kid he shot was.
Trayvon Martin, whose life really is over, won't be there to dispute it.
