As I was helping a friend study the material for her Basics of Health class she is taking online, I noticed a graphic. The first thing I thought about was that this was obviously one of the textbooks the Republicans in Texas did not get to change. It also made me realize that the Republicans are also waging a war on our health. We seem to like the 'War on ...' meme around here, and it is rightly deserved. Here is yet another example. You could also lump in under their 'War on the 20th Century. Follow me below the fold for what I saw....
The graphic in the textbook was based on article by the CDC on the Ten Great Public Health Achievements of the 20th Century.
Upon looking at this list, it does not take Stephen Colbert to see that this list has a decidedly liberal bias. Several of the achievements on that list were strongly opposed by the Republican Party and several of those are STILL IN JEOPARDY as the GOP are still fighting them to this day.
For those who are opposed to clicking on links, here are the 10 Great Achievements:
Vaccination
Motor-vehicle safety
Safer workplaces
Control of infectious diseases
Decline in deaths from coronary heart disease and stroke
Safer and healthier foods
Healthier mothers and babies
Family planning
Fluoridation of drinking water
Recognition of tobacco use as a health hazard
The Tea Party has a large contingent in the anti-vaccine crowd. We all know how bad the GOP crowd hates those pesky regulations and funding of OSHA, the FDA, and the CDC. The GOP is a known friend of Big Tobacco. We all know the current fight the GOP has with Planned Parenthood, SCHIP, Food Stamp funding, and family planning.
The GOP would roll back at least half of these Great Achievements in the name of Corporate Profits and Christian Patriarchal Fanaticism.
(PS, I have to ask, did the GOP also oppose fluoridation and motor vehicle safety measures as well? I'm sure someone will let me know if they did.)
THE GOP - Fighting against your health!
5:16 PM PT: UPDATE: As I figured, Republicans were against Fluoridation and many Vehicle Safety measures. I figured as much, but wanted support from others before adding that. So the question is: IS THERE A SINGLE THING on that list that Republicans support?
