Yes, I know Ann Coulter tries her best to "be outrageous" and "stir up controversy" to help her sell books and get on TV.
So who really cares what she says, since it's all just intended to win attention for her, like a spoiled brat screaming and wailing if she feels she's being ignored?
But she came to my hometown, Springfield, Missouri, a few days ago to speak at Missouri State University, and one of the "outrageous" and "controversial" things she said seems to indicate a change in the right-wing attacks on President Obama.
First, though, I have to point out Coulter didn't draw much of a crowd, only 470 people in a Performing Arts Center with 2,000 seats. This despite the fact that her appearance was heavily promoted by the MSU College Republicans and Springfield's conservative talk radio station. And keep in mind that Springfield is very conservative, the largest city in the ultra-conservative southwest corner of Missouri. So it was encouraging that so few people even in this conservative enclave cared what Coulter had to say.
But the local newspaper, the Springfield News-Leader, put her on their front page the next day, with a big color photo of her onstage with (apparently) uncombed hair. Here's the link if you want to see for yourselves.
The newspaper story quoted her nutty rants and insults. Like these:
Although Coulter granted that, in her view, Obama is an American citizen, she also called him the “jug-eared lunkhead in the White House” and stated he is not a Christian, despite the fact he professes he is.
“He’s an atheist like the rest of his party,” she said. “They’re all atheists.”
So I guess this means the right-wing nuts are dropping their birther arguments and their claims that President Obama is secretly a Muslim, at least.
But oh my God, now all of us are supposed to be atheists? Oops, I guess I should change that: Oh her God, now all of us are supposed to be atheists. Sheesh.
