I might be about this. I am not trolling though, so please make your comments constructive if you disagree. I'm guessing many of you will. I want this to be a conversation and I want to be a better citizen and human being from considering all of your viewpoints.
Anyway, I just saw a Huffpost article which showed a picture of Zimmerman's bleeding head. And frankly I felt like a fool. I was so sure that he was lying. There was no way a kid like Martin could ever confront him. But frankly we were making assumptions. We didn't have all the facts. And now that we were wrong about one piece of speculation, is it right for us to speculate about something else?
EDIT: People are saying that minor cuts can bleed profusely. What I am saying is unless you are the doctor who examined him and determined that it was in fact a minor cut, we should NOT make assumptions. I do not think it is fair to label someone as dishonest without all the facts. Is this not a simple request?
Im not saying we shouldn't stay interested in this case, Im not saying fighting to get him arrested was wrong. In fact, I am all for justice, and I think that whether innocent or guilty, a man needs to stand trial, as is his right and as is society's responsibility.
But now, we succeeded, and the corrupt decision by the state's law enforcement has been superseded and the man will be dealt justice. I feel it is no longer right for us to focus on the question of Zimmerman's justice. I would now focus my efforts on investigating the decision made by the state. Or changing the law about standing your ground. Or changing the law for gun ownership. But I would not (or should not) speculate about a particular piece of evidence or about a single man's character or his honesty. It is not our role or the media's role to dole out justice at an individual level. This is why I really dislike what HLN and Nancy Grace does.
Am I wrong about this? I feel weird now because I still hate the guy for killing a kid, and I guess that was what made me think of him as a liar about the bleeding head in the first place. But I'm clearly wrong about that now. Doesn't that mean I'm too emotional to render a proper judgment about this? Doesn't that mean this isn't our place to make such decisions?
There is a diary attacking Zimmerman's character on DK. It makes me uncomfortable now. Now that we are wrong about his bleeding head, the diarist is now making accusations about the honesty of the pictures and asking why he didn't post others about his nose. Is this really the road we want to be going down? We were wrong about speculation about one thing, so we justify our mistake by speculating about something else... is that how justice is supposed to work?
This reminds me of the time of the Arizona shooting, where everyone assumed that because it was a democratic representative who was shot, the shooter must be a member of the tea party. The guy turned out to be mentally ill. Its not real justice to make such assumptions without true evidence, and frankly it distracts from larger messages we should be fighting about.
Id rather fight about the law and about the corrupt government rather than one man no one really knows anything about.
Regardless, I want him to get justice, but I want him to get it in court, not on a Daily Kos diary.
Edit: I would appreciate if people who disagreed with me would please address the particular questions and concerns I posed. Im trying to learn something new.
Edit: By the way, if you read some of my other diaries, they are usually about why we shouldn't speculate about Obama or speculate about Global Warming, etc. etc. My point here is that I am willing to stand up for the principles of evidence based discussion whether it is a president I love, or a man I hate like Zimmerman.
