Today on Fox News Sunday Ron Johnson, Republican US Senator from Wisconsin, said that banning high capacity rifle magazines is an infringement of a constitutional right.
I sent him the following email:
Senator Johnson,
Your statement regarding high capacity magazines during your interview with Chris Wallace on Fox News defies all logic and sense. You said that banning these types of magazines infringes on our freedom. Freedom to do what? The ONLY thing that this kind of weaponry is designed and used for is fast human carnage. Are you saying we should be free to kill a large number of people in a short time? We ban drunk driving. We ban the possession of toxic gas. We ban rocket launchers and grenades. Does this infringe on some sort of freedom? And aren't high capacity magazines just an extension of these types of weapons?
Freedom does not mean that we should be able to carry weapons of war on our streets. Freedom means that we should feel free to walk our streets without feeling threatened by the possibility that someone else out there has a weapon that belongs on a battlefield.
I urge you to take a few minutes and think. Think about the consequences of playing politics with human lives. Think about the flawed logic of your position. And remember that your represent real people- people who bleed and die when they're shot. You do not represent the NRA and their agenda.
I know that it will probably be read by a staffer and Johnson will never see it, but I feel compelled to keep trying. Thanks for reading.
