I only watched Doctor Who when I was a little, little kid in the 70s. It wasn't until just a few years ago I picked it back up. And wow, wow, wow I missed so darn much. For those of you that wonder what the heck is Doctor Who, well Wikipedia's opening graph is kind of relevant:
Doctor Who is a British science fiction television programme produced by the BBC. The programme depicts the adventures of a Time Lord—a time travelling, humanoid alien with two hearts known as the Doctor. He explores the universe in his TARDIS (Time And Relative Dimension In Space), a sentient, telepathic time-and-space-travel machine that flies through the time vortex. Its exterior appears as a blue British police box, a common sight in 1963, when the series first aired. Along with a succession of companions, the Doctor faces a variety of foes while working to save civilisations, help ordinary people, and right wrongs.
Since the show started in 1963 there have been 11 Doctors.
The shows does something interesting. When they transition to a different Doctor (insert actor) that looks and might not sound like the previous one they call it regeneration. Where the Doctor takes on a new body and to some extent maybe even a somewhat different personality as part of the show.
Below the fold some more Doctor Who and goodbye Amy Pond.
I started watching when the newest doctor, played by Matt Smith started. In his first show he lands in like the 1970s UK in the yard of a young girl. She is sad and alone. Since the Doctor has just regenerated he is hungry and in the first few minutes of the show she fixes him every food in the house, cause he isn't sure what he likes, and he spits most of it up on the wall.
He decides to take her with him (that companion thing) and tells her to pack her bags, he'll be right back, he has something to go do (like save the universe). She sits and waits.
What for him might have only been minutes or hours, well when he returns it was in fact 12 years later for her.
The Doctor saves the world, as he is wont to do, and she decides to come with him .... I mean who wouldn't want to travel through the universe in time and space?
That women's name is Amy Pond, maybe my favorite chacter in any TV show I've ever seen!
We meet her boyfriend and soon to be husband Rory, who comes along with them. A man we will find sits outside a prison by himself, not moving, for 1,000 years waiting for her, cause he refuses to leave her.
We met her daughter River Song, who we have no idea at first is Amy's daughter cause she is an adult woman, and the Doctor's love interest. A person we find lives in an exact different timeline than the Doctor, so the kiss we see between them in the show we later learn for him is the first time the Doctor thinks they met and for her the last time they are together. They live their love affair in opposite directions.
Confused? Well time travel is a bitch :)!
Well this Saturday on the BBC and BBC America it all starts again. To say I can't wait is an understatement. We know Amy Pond exits on the third show. We know there are going to be some epic battles. Again I can't wait. Lets get it on Doctor.
Update: Oh here is a video of when Amy and the Doctor met again after him being gone for 12 years.
