Have your heard? The GOP, coming off a complete dud of their own convention, have decided they need a do-over and are planning a "counter convention" during the Democratic Convention in Charlotte.
Republicans plan to bracket Democrats’ Charlotte, N.C., convention with an unprecedented counter-convention right outside the gates of the Time Warner Cable Arena, where Democrats will gather after Labor Day.
When I read it I thought, "This is not going to end well for them."
Here's why:
It will be an effort full of gimmicks, including a Romney-Ryan NASCAR race car – number 12 for 2012, of course.
And while Democrats have happily made light of Mitt Romney’s “Etch A Sketch” foible, Republicans will bring their own toys, including “You Build It” Legos and “You Build It” Monopoly.
Republicans have tried to woo independent voters who supported President Obama in 2008 but are disappointed in his performance.
To that point, they’ll have plenty of Kleenex – “because breaking up is hard to do” – according to the plan.
Seriously? They think THIS will woo independent voters who voted for Obama? Really?
Holyeee Shit.
Really, who the bloody fuck is running that campaign over there?! I'd like to give him an award.
The good news for us is that the media WILL cover it. The bad news for the GOP is that they will deepen the degree to which sane Americans will be repulsed. Frankly, I didn't think it possible. But I;m learning never to say never with these bozos. This is not going to work out well for them. It will blow up in the face, cost them voters and may actually cost them a few polling points. In fact, they may actually create a situation where they lose favorability and that, combined with a modest democratic post-convention bounce, make it appear that we end up with a bigger bounce that we otherwise would have.
Good going dumb asses. In fact, I think we actually ought to cover it ourselves, JUST IN CASE the media doesn't. That's how bad an idea I think this counter-convention is. So if you're in Charlotte, head on over and take your camera. Don't engage them argumentatively. Just capture the antics first hand.
But I believe the media will cover it because, well, it's drama. The sweet irony of this is that BECAUSE the media loves controversy and drama, they will have the opportunity to be seen in all their petulant glory. And Americans will wonder why they're doing this and think to themselves, "I didn't see any such thing from the Democrats at the RNC convention." Which would be true.
Honestly, if it was any other operation, I'd be concerned. But on this, I'm totally not. While the GOP conduct themselves like a bunch of frat boys outside the convention, and the media is irresistibly drawn to it, they will lose everyone else.
This is nothing but the desperation of a losing party. I hope you have popcorn. Good times!
