This is a quick hit in the irony department. Atlas Shrugged I and II, the film versions of Ayn Rand's horrible book, were heavily financed by John Aglialoro, who owned the film rights. John Aglialoro and his wife Joan Carter made their fortune by starting a business with the help of a loan from the Small Business Administration.
The business grew into UM Holdings, owner of Cybex. The UM Holdings self published history on its webpage erases this inconvenient fact, particularly inconvenient given the company's financial support--through their foundation--of the CATO Institute, the Atlas Society and the Freedom Works Foundation. But Joan Carter let the cat out of the bag in an interview with her alma mater Wooster College.
As a refresher: In the Small Business Act of July 30, 1953, Congress created the Small Business Administration, whose function was to "aid, counsel, assist and protect, insofar as is possible, the interests of small business concerns." The charter also stipulated that SBA would ensure small businesses a "fair proportion" of government contracts and sales of surplus property.
Obvious Socialism!
