The temptation to do a "47%" diary was nearly irresistable. As the Muse and I mulled how to approach it, I checked Facebook and saw a status update that stuck with me all afternoon. And so I leave the Rmoney snark to other wonderful diaries (and, possibly, the comments down below) and head towards the philosophical below the dingledoodle squigglie dKosagnocchi dividerthingie fold after a word from our sponsor...
Here at Top Comments we strive to nourish community by rounding up some of the site's best, funniest, most mojo'd & most informative commentary, and we depend on your help!! If you see a comment by another Kossack that deserves wider recognition, please send it either to topcomments at gmail or to the Top Comments group dKosemailbox by 9:30pm Eastern. Please please please include a few words about why you sent it in as well as your user name (even if you think we know it already :-)), so we can credit you with the find!
The status update in question was from someone remembering a particular event in their life, how they were afraid to take "that step" but did and it turned out to be so wonderful. They then said: ...it always reminds me that I need to take the chance and make the leap, I think we more often regret missed opportunities than we do missteps.
I agree 47 100% that the regrets in our lives generally are of the missed chances and not mistakes type. I make a mistake, in general I learn from it, and it adds to the person I am today. I in general like myself, meaning that even the missteps and mistakes made me the Brillig I am today.
Missed opportunities, on the other hand, are harder for me. What could I have been, or done, or learned, or seen? What would that have changed in my timeline? I think about how many chances I haven't taken in my life. How many times I was afraid to ask for what I wanted, or say hi to someone who looked like they needed a friend. I wonder who I missed out on, or what I could have had if I'd asked.
I also think about the times I did speak up, or say hi, or attempt something I'd never tried and wasn't sure I could accomplish. Little things, like making it to the top of a climbing wall one vacation. Even if I thought I needed the staff to come up and help me down since letting go of the top for the belay down was scarier than getting there :-). The people I now hold dear in my life that never would have become so vital had I not taken the chance and opened up.
When I think about the biggest leap I have ever taken, the one that came to mind first, and probably is the biggest best one hands down, is the utter and total leap of faith that was saying "Yes, we'll accept that referral of a small boy in Ethiopia." The boy who became K2.
Best leap ever. How about you, what leaps did you take, or not take, and do you think you'll regret the road not taken or the road you made a mistake on?
Brillig's ObDisclaimer: The decision to publish each nomination lies with the evening's Diarist and/or Comment Formatter. My evenings at the helm, I try reeeeallllyy hard to publish everything
without regard to content. I really do, even when I disagree personally with any given nomination. "TopCommentness" lies in the eyes of the nominator and of you, the reader - I leave the decision to you. I do
not publish self-nominations (ie your own comments) and if I ruled the world, we'd all build community, supporting and uplifting instead of tearing our fellow Kossacks down.
From madhaus:
This comment by ReverseThePolarity in Kaili Joy Gray's Romney campaign non-responds to devastating videos of Mitt being a dick was brilliant. (Diarist's note: came in juuuust after last night's diary published)
I admit, I didn't see this one coming, but this one by dharmafarmer is deep in comments with everyone discussing the Fail that is Team Romney.
From Steveningen:
In FiredUpInCA's diary Jimmy Carter's Grandson Made the Mitt Romney Video Viral, Gooserock gets in one hell of a dig. Don't believe me? As of this submission, it has received 376 uprates. (Diarist's note: nominated just after closing time last night, but the extra bits in the thread today make it extra superb today!)
From Yours Truly, brillig:
sawgrass727 on Rmoney's speech last nite. Montco PA Dem and TexDem for the tagteam reply and re-reply.
