From time to time, I like to share news from Canada in a series I call "Notes from the North". Today I am proud to tell you about a random act of kindness that recently occurred right here in my home town.
A bus driver named Kris Doubledee was driving his route when he noticed a homeless man walking barefoot on a chilly morning. He stopped the bus, got off, and spoke to him. The passengers watched in surprise as Mr. Doubledee took off his shoes and gave them to the homeless man.
When asked why he did it, he replied, "I couldn't stand seeing someone walking barefoot in temperatures like this."
He later said, "You know, it was something I could do. It looked like he needed the shoes more than I did. Anybody would do the same thing."
The passengers were impressed with his generosity and spread the story of this good samaritan. Although he is quite shy, he has since been interviewed by many TV reporters and newspapers and will even travel to New York to appear on the CBS morning show.
Mr. Doubledee says he hopes his gesture will inspire kindness in others. I hope by reading his story, you too will be inspired. I found it very uplifting and encouraging to read about such a selfless act at a time when we seem to be hearing a lot about greed and lack of compassion for our fellow human beings.

The story reminded me of this beautiful song:
I am giving the last word to the hero of this story. He says:
“Just slow down a bit and pay attention to your brother and sister and help them out.”
