Good Morning, Everyone!
Welcome again to Saturday Morning Home Repair blogging, where we talk about fixing houses, the things in them that are supposed to work for us, and fixing them up. An ad hoc cadre of building professionals and gifted amateurs attempt to answer questions that arise from raiders, and offer encouragement and advice for those inclined to do things for themselves, if they can. We all do a lot of things, collectively, and can probably help out with insights from our vast experience.
Or sometimes, we just gab.
Not too much to report this AM. We've cranked out lots of stuff, but most of it outside - taking advantage of the great early fall weather.
One indoor thing that we're working on is the dining room ceiling. Previous home owner/house wrecker put up a crappy plaster job that was starting to peel away from the old ceiling. I scraped the whole mess off over the course of a couple of weekends and now we're debating what to do with it.
The house was built in 1916, so tin tiles would be fun. Expensive, though. Don't tell anyone, but we ordered a sample pack of the polystyrene look alikes and I'll be darned if they don't look fantastic when they're painted. Seriously, once you paint over the sort of "translucence" of the polystyrene, the shadowing of the various textures looks amazing.
But - there is the environmental aspect of it. And, though treated to not burn, they will melt, unlike tin. So. Now you know our ugly secret. Talk me down.
(((Sigh.)))
Anyway. That's the current project and dilemma.
Here's the site that has the ceiling tiles. Tin, PVC and poly. Some of the patterns are so cool. And some are really quite hideous. :-)
What's up at your house?
