Good morning, and I can see it! Welcome to Saturday Morning Garden Blogging.
Denver's weather has been bobbing all over the place this last week. We've had hints of spring as the high climbed to the upper 60s last weekend — only to get snow a couple of days later. And then on Wednesday the high went back to the 60s… followed by cold and snow on Friday.
By Sunday, we're forecast to be bumping up against the 60s again.
This is has been the weirdest fucking January. But the angle of the sun is changing. It tickles my lizard brain and brings the promise of the planting season to come.
Of course, it does help that the forced hyacinth have started to bloom. I have at least a couple of dozen at various stages, and I keep one near wherever I happen to be. Ohhh, I do love the scent of hyacinth.
Between bouts of snow, I've been able to find hints of the spring-to-come outside, too. There are sprouts of johnny jump ups, and — hooray! — the tips of some of the spring bulbs starting to emerge. We've had pretty good moisture this year, so I'm hopeful that the tulip display this year will be better than last year's was.
I've ordered some more antique gladiolus from Old House Gardens, and need to get my order for begonia tubers in. I'm still deciding on what type of melons I'm going to try this year, and pondering the best way to trellis them up. I'm thinking that I might plant corn in several large hills, with the melons in the center of each; that way they can use the corn stalks to climb.
We're just a month away from the seventh anniversary of Saturday Morning Garden Blogging, which means we're just a month away from the beginning of gardening season here in Denver.
That's what's happening here. What's going on in you garden?
