Welcome everyone! This is a politics-free zone. Our rules are simple: leave the pie fights at the door and no trolling. This a place to enjoy and share are our furry friends. Of course, we do welcome serious topics like questions regarding animal health and well-being. Now come on in and relax for awhile.
Recently,
an article was published on how kawaii, Japanese for cute, helped improve fine motor performance and visual searching. Participants that viewed photos of puppies and kittens improved their fine motor performance in the game Operation compared to those that looked at photos of adult dogs and cats. A different group were tested in a visual task after viewing cute (puppies and kittens) or not as cute (adult dogs and cats). Those that viewed the cute photos were on average quicker at identifying particular letters or numbers in a matrix than those who viewed the not as cute photos.
The authors conclude in part that
Kawaii things not only make us happier, but also affect our behavior. This study shows that viewing cute things improves subsequent performance in tasks that require behavioral carefulness, possibly by narrowing the breadth of attentional focus.
