Which political party’s president has added more to the national debt, Republicans or Democrats?
The answer is absolutely clear and unambiguous: Republicans have added nearly twice as much to the Federal Debt as Democrats, yet the GOP likes to wrap itself in the mantle of being fiscally responsible.
Consider these charts, which you can verify for yourself. This shows the amount added to the total debt under each president since Nixon/Ford. As we can see, G.W. Bush takes the prize as being the most reckless, by far:
This shows more clearly how much of the current federal debt is attributable to previous presidents.
More below the fold...
That second chart shows the accumulated debt under each president, that is passed along to the next president. It’s important to keep in mind that each subsequent president carries the debt burden, ongoing expense of programs (like the Afghanistan and Iraq wars), and interest payment of all the presidents before him:
The next chart simply shows all the share of debt added by Republican and Democrat administrations:
It's pretty clear which party is the most fiscally responsible.
It is also important to know that only President Clinton had a budget with a surplus in any annual budget. All other presidents produced only annual deficits.
Please promote this to your right-wing friends who believe that Republicans care about the Federal Debt.
