NBC News reports:
The U.S. Navy is sending three helicopter carrier ships to the coast off New York and New Jersey to help rescue and recovery operations in the wake of superstorm Sandy, officials told NBC News.
Navy officials said USS Wasp, USS Carter Hall, and USS Mesa Verde had been ordered to head to the area to provide landing platforms for Coast Guard, National Guard and civilian agency helicopters if needed.
The Atlantic Fleet command made the decision in the name of "prudent planning," officials said.

On The Maddow Blog, Steve Benen points out that Faux News' Brit Hume is wrong in his tweet asserting "the big federal government went home". Government hasn't gone home.
It's government that's delivering relief supplies, government that's rescuing the stranded, and government that took preparatory steps to mitigate the devastation before the storm hit.
Kudos to all those involved in assisting in the rescue and recovery.
I'll take big government over small minds like Brit Hume's any day.
