Is it too soon to start planning?? Make no mistake about it, we don't want to spend more time preparing table decorations and buying party hats than we do on GOTV efforts, and of course, we don't want to be in full party mode when so many of our friends are suffering on the East Coast, but something just...feels right...about knowing I do indeed need to at least think about the fact that I'm going to have a bunch of people over on election night, we're going to eat, and we're going to drink. Something feels right about knowing it is indeed going to be a night to celebrate, and I'm sorry, but I do need to have enough napkins and at some point I've got to start slicing cheese! I can't stress enough that I'm not counting my chickens, and I'm on a team that will help drive Missouri voters to the polls to make sure Todd (the creep) Akin loses. I live on the Kansas side and have already voted, but I plan to cross the state line and help out, since there's been a call to action to ensure Claire wins! So, believe me, I have my priorities in order. But I wondered what your plans were for the big night, and if you think you'll be watching alone or in a group? And...What's to eat?
In 2008, I served a big pot of sweet potato and corn chowder, with homemade rolls and a fresh salad. There were appetizers of course, and for dessert we had apple crisp and vanilla ice cream. Since I had families over, I didn't serve a lot of alcohol, but wine was available, and the kids had sparkling cider. Like everyone, we crowded around the tee-vee, and when President Obama finally closed the deal, we ran outside (keep in mind I live in Kansas!) and banged pots and pans on our front porch. I know my neighbors' heads were exploding, but we sure as hell didn't care!!
Of course this time around is different, but the fight is still the same: Either you're in it for yourself with the asshole Romney, or we're all in it together with President Obama. We're still fighting for something bigger than ourselves and the forces against us are just as evil and ugly as ever--perhaps even uglier, if that's even possible. And so everyone on this site has worked incredibly hard to win, and it will be a sweet victory when we do.
Usually, I don't talk like this. I'm a chicken-little at heart and I'm extremely superstitious and hate to jinx things. In fact, I don't watch KU Basketball games because I am a jinx and I don't want to screw them up! But for some reason, I don't feel like I'm jinxing ANYTHING when I say we're going to win! I don't think it's crazy to think about how loudly I'm going to scream on my porch again when it's finally over. I'm visioning this and I'm claiming it! So in a way, my party planning is me creating a future that I'm claiming and believing will happen. And it's important in my vision to have a good menu, with good friends, and great desserts.
What are your election night plans? It's okay to dream.. We're going to win! GOTV!!!
