On election night, Patrick Murphy defeated Rep. Allen West (R - BatshitCrazyville) by a margin of 160,328 votes to West’s 157,872 - 0.8%. Florida law has no provision for recounts if the margin is above 0.5%, but West isn't letting that stop him.
From TCPalm.com:
U.S. Rep. Allen West is demanding a full hand recount in St. Lucie County after blasting its supervisor of elections for “disturbing irregularities” at polls and a late-night “recount” of votes that favored Patrick Murphy by a thin margin.
He also filed injunctions against the supervisors of elections in Palm Beach and St. Lucie counties to impound their voting machines and paper ballots used in the District 18 election. Martin County Supervisor of Elections Vicki Davis said her office wasn’t included, however.
West won the Martin County part of FL-18 by a 14% margin, so naturally he has no interest in recounting those votes. Palm Beach county votes were just about equally divided, while St. Lucie county went for Murphy by 11%.
The Palm Beach county motion is scheduled to be heard this afternoon at 5pm. The St. Lucie county motion is scheduled for tomorrow.
West will apparently allege some kind of irregularities or misconduct on the part of election officials. It doesn't seem to me that he has a leg to stand on, but you never know.
