...America voted for Obama because progressive values are American values. This election has proven yet again that America values solidarity, fairness, equal rights, and real responsibility. The values that made America a great nation. These values are ageless, genderless, and raceless.
...Presidential elections are the ones which citizens pay the most attention to, and are most likely to vote in. If you're looking for the purest existing way of expressing the will of the American majority, you look at the popular vote in Presidential elections. In the last 6 presidential elections, Republicans only won the popular vote once - and only by a few thousand votes...
I don't like all this talk about Obama's re-election being about demographics.
I'm resigned to hearing this sort of horse-race "Who's got the better electioneering team" from the mainstream media.
I'm used to hearing "everyone other than whites just votes for a skin color" from the openly racist, and then hearing the cleaned-up, slightly more refined version of the same thing from mainstream republicans.
The GOP knows that they can only win when the 99% is divided - it doesn't matter what division, along what fault line, or which faction of the 99% has the upper hand. Thousands of years of history teach us that for the powerful and privileged, any division will do.
But when I see this sort of stuff seeping into progressive websites it makes me have to say "WAKE UP!"
1. America voted for Obama because progressive values are American values. This election has proven yet again that America values solidarity, fairness, equal rights, and real responsibility. The values that made America a great nation. Our values are ageless, genderless, and raceless.
2. America voted for Obama because America is overwhelmingly progressive on all major issues that government deals with. Follow the link to read poll after poll after poll where Americans choose "we're all in this together" over "you're on your own".
One particularly stunning finding is that Americans want the same wealth distribution as SWEDEN:
92 percent of Americans would choose to live in a society with far less income disparity than the US, choosing Sweden's model over that of the US....when asked to choose how much the top 20 percent should have, on average respondents said 32 percent -- a number similar to the wealth distribution seen in Sweden.
3. Presidential elections are the ones which citizens pay the most attention to, and are most likely to vote in. If you're looking for the purest existing way of expressing the will of the American majority, you look at the popular vote in Presidential elections. In the last 6 presidential elections, Republicans only won the popular vote once - and only by a few thousand votes.
4. Did Obama win because Mitt Romney was a "bad candidate"? That's beside the point. Bad Candidates don't just happen. They don't just fall out of the sky and land in your lap. They win primaries because people voted for them. Republicans chose Mitt Romney based on Republican thinking, Republican ideas, and Republican sources of information. Republicans had more than 300,000,000 eligible Americans to choose from, yet somehow they still chose their "bad candidate". That says something about their thinking, their ideas, and their sources of information.
5. Mandate. Say it loud, say it proud. MANDATE!
