Hello everyone. On my way home I encountered a homeless man. Judging by his appearance I'd have to assume he's in his 50s or possibly older. This isn't uncommon for me, to tell you the truth. I run into homeless people a lot where I'm from, especially in that demographic.
I handed him what little cash I had in my pocket because I felt he needed it a hell of a lot more than I, and this is where it got worse...you see, this man wasn't just homeless, he was also deaf.
As I went to help him out, he signed 'thank you.' and even offered me part of the candy bar he'd been eating. I declined, of course, because like I said, he needed it more than I did. I sincerely wish I could have done more to help him. I can't even begin to fathom what kind of trials or tribulations he faces on a daily basis..
I'll write a bit more below the jump.
Seeing something like that really hit me hard, because I've heard people say such callous things such as 'if a person is homeless, they choose to be that way.' I'd like to remind those folks that it could just as easily be them that could end up on the streets, whether from debt, absurd medical bills or otherwise.
That's part of the reason I helped this man, even though it was a small gesture, because had it not been for those people now in my life, I could be in that position myself.
I write this diary not to brag or boast, but to make folks aware that there are people like this out there, and that they need any help that they can get. The fact that there people like this in such a position is a disgrace.
I hope he gets the help he needs, and I'm only sorry I could do no more.
I realize it's the peak of election season, but folks, please, if you see someone in such a position like I did today, give them a hand up, no matter how small.
See you around,
Homer
