Here we go again. Example #3175 of someone becoming completely unhinged by the re-election of Barack Obama. Have you ever seen such a collection of hyperbolic drama queens as those on the right?
This time it's the treasurer of the Hardin County Republican Party in Texas who's gone off the deep end. In an article in Salon, Peter Morrison is quoted as saying:
“We must contest every single inch of ground and delay the baby-murdering, tax-raising socialists at every opportunity. But in due time, the maggots will have eaten every morsel of flesh off of the rotting corpse of the Republic, and therein lies our opportunity.”
He then hints that it may be time for Texas to take its ball and go home:
“Texas was once its own country, and many Texans already think in nationalist terms about their state,” Morrison continued. “We need to do everything possible to encourage a long-term shift in thinking on this issue. Why should Vermont and Texas live under the same government? Let each go her own way in peace, sign a free trade agreement among the states and we can avoid this gut-wrenching spectacle every four years.”
Ah, there it is - the secessionist canard that Rick Perry threw out the LAST time Obama was elected. Some things never change, I guess.
Well, good luck with that fellas. I hate to have to be the one to point this out to you but Vermont receives $1.09 back for every dollar it pays in federal taxes while Texas receives $1.51. So, in a way, the fine folks in Vermont are helping to subsidize their fellow citizens in Texas. With a state like Massachusetts, the disparity is even more stark. That state receives only $.55 back for every dollar it sends into the treasury.
In fact, in general, blue states pay more and get less back in federal revenue than red states.
So Morrison may want to consider just how far Texas could go without the support of the federal government.
And the official reaction to Morrison's statements? Well, as zenbassoon and scrapyard ape below pointed out, even Batman had a comment!
Reached for comment by Bud Kennedy at the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Kent Batman, the chairman of the Hardin County Republican Party, said: “Wow.”
“OK, well — I guess I need to start taking a look at his newsletters,” Batman said.
D'ya think?
And, on a final note, Morrison was chosen by the State Board of Education Chairman in Texas to help select textbooks for the state. I'll let that statement speak for itself.
