I haven't seen anyone cover the debate between Rep. Jerry Mcnerney and Republican challenger Ricky Gill. Nevertheless, I just found the video of the debate and am therefore showing it in case any of you are paying attention to the race in California's 11th Congressional District.
As a number of you Kos people know, Jerry Mcnerney is an unlikely Congressman who began to pursue running for Congress as his son used him as a write-in candidate for the 2004 election. Since then, Mcnerney beat Richard Pombo in 2006 and became probably the most unlikely Democrat to have won a seat that year (even though his support network was very well organized, more so than expected).
However, Mcnerney has been challenged not once but twice for re-election there was fear that he'd lose both re-election campaigns (more so in 2010). Mcnerney ended up winning in 2010 by just a sliver and that in itself is a greater accomplishment knowing that Wisconsin became brain dead when it decided to defeat outstanding progressive U.S. Senator Russ Feingold for re-election.
Ricky Gill, however, is becoming a top candidate that the GOP is watching out for, someone who is a 25 year old kid who thinks he's going to be a revolutionary political figure for the GOP. They keep saying he's a star. A star of what, hypocrasy?
Don't get me wrong. Mr. Gill is a bright guy but he's also naive. As much as he'd love to make a difference for California's 11th Congressional District, in the end he'll become Richard Pombo all over again and we don't want Pombo's legacy to turn up in Tracy where even after he lost he still had real estate venues named after him. The point being is that Mr. Gill will just become a tool by the Tea Party and unless he pulls a John McCain, he'll just get sucked into the machine real fast. I mean, seriously, how can Mr. Gill have the audacity to challenge Mcnerney and say it's important for there to be a native of the 11th District to be representing it.
Um, no Mr. Gill, it's important that whoever represents the 11th district actually represents it. You are out of touch because Mcnerney actually is a well-respected and open-communicator as a Congressman and unlike you, he actually listens.
Nice try but I don't want a 25 year old kid with no real real-world experience aside from being a student representative at the local School Board to become a Congressman. I want real leaders, people who think outside the box and communicate with their own constituents.
Anyway, since it's a day before the election, no time for discussion. Just action.
