There is no bottom to the National Organization for Marriage's desperation. They will truly stoop to every low. You may remember from earlier this year when a 2009 internal memo surfaced showing that NOM's official strategy was to drive a wedge in the African American community on the issue of marriage equality. They're pathetic. But this kind of grasping and clawing can be expected, I suppose, as the polls continue to shift in our favor, more national figures come out in support of equality, and more victories are won at the state level. Hell, by June, we may even have a national victory, now that the Supreme Court has taken up the Prop 8 and DOMA cases. So yes, those who make a living attempting to stop marriage equality are getting scared.
Perhaps nothing shows that better than NOM's latest move. Jeremy Hooper of the Human Rights Campaign's NOM Exposed has discovered that a number of web domains have been scarfed up in the past year. Domains like (wait for it)...gaysagainstgaymarriage.org, gaysagainstssm.org, and others.
Here's the list of domains that have suddenly been purchased this year:
Who's the purchaser? Well, according to the DomainTools records, none other than Brian Brown, president of NOM.
So this is where we are now. Knowing their own base of support is shrinking rapidly, the anti-gay right is apparently planning to attempt to divide gay people. The only gays against marriage equality I know of are fringe gay conservatives and certain gays who oppose marriage completely. A laughable strategy, yes. But what else do they have, now that the tide of progress is rolling them over?
(Or hey, maybe the new web domains mean something else entirely.)
NOM is truly trying to stop an avalanche with a picket fence. Good luck with the new strategy. You're going to need it.
