It was this time last year that the Subscription drive was in full swing. I was poor, about to lose my apartment and move in with my in-laws who only had a very slow dial up connection. When I asked to be put on the list, I had a good reason. My in-laws ancient computer and even more ancient internet connection would have choked and died on the (very limited, honestly) ads that are on this site without the subscription.
Much to my surprise, someone actually bought me a gift subscription, a subscription whose benefits I still enjoy today (albeit on a much faster internet connection and in my own house). And I just wanted to say -- thank you. Thank you very much. It really speaks to this community's character that someone who has never met me, who will never know me, spent 100 dollars to keep me on this website. It was, honestly, one of the most generous things someone has ever done for me.
And this community is never short on generosity. You guys, all of you, have been there for me in my time of need, be it monetarily or emotionally. This place is truly a refuge from the cold, mean place we collectively call the internet. As so many have said before, and I say again -- I came for the politics and stayed for the community.
Its not just about money. This is one of the only communities out there that has truly accepted me for who I am, and never demanded I be something I am not. During the times of high stress and high emotion I can come to this place, and its safe. And you know what, honestly, that is the best part of this community.
Anyway, this was a short diary. I just wanted to say thank you to all those who participated in the Subscription drive both last year and this one. It was truly, truly a sight to behold. You guys are the best.
