But it would be fun to ask those who back it how to pay for it.
My answer, "Tax the sales of semi-automatic guns and ammunition clips holding more than twelve rounds."
Rough calculations below the chalk outline of the NRA's twisted logic, brought down by a masked gunman with an AR-15.
There are approximately 132,656 schools across the country.
Perhaps 5% are large enough that they would require a second "armed baby-sitter".
That would suggest that 139,000 guards would need to be hired.
At $40,000 per year in cost (wages, benefits, and range fees), that would represent more that $5.5 Billion. Per year. Every year.
The education budget ought not to be forced to pay for this self-indulgent bandaid proposed by the NRA. Rather the cost should be bourne by those who cause it to be needed.
Referring to this article from Slate, there are perhaps 3.1 million assault style rifles in the US. If there is 10% new manufacture each year, that would suggest 310,000 such rifles sold in a given year. I have no idea if there are better numbers available. If so, please let me know.
So the $5.5 Billion divided by 310K assault style weapons equals an $17,972 surcharge on the price of a $1,000 to $1,500 weapon.
Too much you say? Then ask all current owners of assault style weapons to pony up annually for the priveledge. That would only be $1,700 per year.
Or perhaps tax ammunition to that rate.
Liberty has its price. Gunowners, how do you wish to pay?
