I guess the NRA figured out that Wayne LaPierre's call for firearms in all schools didn't go over well with much of the public, and probably a lot of its own membership.
So today, on CNN, NRA President David Keene walked it back, casting lies along the way.
Here's what Wayne LaPierre said:
I call on Congress today to act immediately, to appropriate whatever is necessary to put armed police officers in every school -- and to do it now, to make sure that blanket of safety is in place when our children return to school in January. [P. 3, last para]
Here's what Keene said today:
"Whether an individual school wants that kind of protection or doesn't want that kind of protection is really up to the individual school," Keene said. "And when we made that statement, when Wayne LaPierre spoke about a week ago, he suggested that what has to happen, and what should happen, is in every school district, administrators, teachers and parents should sit down and ask what's needed to protect the students in that school." [see clip below approx 1:50]
Absolutely nowhere did LaPierre say that " ... administrators, teachers and parents should sit down and ask what's needed ..."
Mr. Keene, you, sir, are a lying liar. And that's not the only lie he told! Watch him tap dance around private sales. He doesn't agree with anything associated with private sales which make up 40% of the firearms sold.
See for yourself:
UPDATE: Because I know this will come up, here is what Keene was referring to in speaking about LaPierre:
Right now, today, every school in the United States should plan meetings with parents, school administrators, teachers and local authorities -- and draw upon every resource available -- to erect a cordon of protection around our kids right now. Every school will have a different solution based on its own unique situation.[P. 4, second para at LaPierre speech link]
This came after his flat out call for weapons in all schools. LaPierre said what was needed; guns in all--ALL--schools.
