I am a moderate and have spent my life voting for the person I felt matched my views. I would usually vote Republican in the elections but I always voted Democratic in the primaries. Did I do it to subvert the Democrats? No I did not. I always gave it a lot of thought and would vote for the Democrat that I felt would be the closest aligned to my views should my favored candidate lose. If this was a normal year that might mean that I would ask for a Republican ticket this year and vote for the person I think will do the least damage if they were to beat President Obama.
This is not normal year, there is not a single Republican candidate who I think won't do great deal of damage to the country. I think voting for Santorum because you feel he would be easier to beat is a bad idea. Ethics aside I'll tell you why.
Be careful what you wish for. You just may get it. I can tell you from experience, that most Republicans I know vote for their feelings not on the issues. People I know feel that Sanatorum while extreme at least has conviction in what he believes, and they like that. To them he comes across a lot more trustworthy than Romney or Gingrich. This could sway undecided independents. Especially those who don't pay attention to politics other that that gut feeling a candidate gives them. I myself want no part of accidentally getting this man into office. If Obama should (god forbid) lose in November to Santorum do we really want to think we had any thing to do with helping making him the nominee?
Secondly, lately Republicans get rabid if they think liberals are trying to mess with their election. It could really fire up the tea bag base. We saw what an enthusiastic tea bag base did in November 2010. Do we want to inject enthusiasm into a lackluster primary season? I know I don't.I have never seen a more divisive time in American politics. The hate each party feels for the other is palatable. Do we really want to feed into that?
Raising money for Operation Hilarity means that that's money that could better be spent for close elections in other races. We saw what happens when Democrats stay home. We end up with States full of more Republicans, who in turn have big impact on Unions, teacher salary and even voter districts and voter rules. This can make it even harder for us to win back our candidates the next election.
I can't stand the thought of a Republican in the White House. If by some chance one of them gets there I want to know I had nothing to do with it.
