Why is birth control against Christianity? Because sex, according to the (sometime) celibate, male clergy, was thought up by G-D in order to make children, and for no other reason. Therefore, preventing the possibility of a divine Gift, is a sin and you should (probably) go to hell for it.
However, why should others not have access to birth control? After all, if you don't believe in family planning, that your beeswax, what's it to me?! I mean, if you really want to be strict about it, as lots of Orthodox Jews are, even an emission of semenal fluid purposefully outside the womb is a waste of "potential life" and....yup, you guessed it, a SIN!
The Jews, even though through thousands of years of study of the Torah, (the first five books of the Old Testament) the Talmud, the compliation of all the rules outlined by G-D in the Old Testament, have mostly, clear cut answers on most topics that are being debated right now, no one asks them. These men, have dedicated their lives to debating the minutia of all of G-Ds laws. How many goats is a woman worth if her hair isn't down to her waist, but rather only to her shoulders. How long should a prayer shawl be in order to be pleasing to the Lord? But most importantly, when is a fetus a person? Is abortion a sin? Is the most valued thing in the world a life?
I would assume, as a somewhat reasonable person, that in cases of doubt, those wanting a 'professional' opinion, regardless of their brand of religion (as long as it stems from the bible) would turn to these learned men. But they don't!
Why?
There are many reasons, not a few of them having to do with bigotry, prejudice and the belief that Jews were somehow responsible for the death of the Christian savior, even though his death was the point of his life and also, (if you believe that Jesus was the son of G-d) G-Ds plan from the get-go.
No, you see, it is because, for the most part, Jews believe, (hold your breath now, because this is a novel concept for many Christians) in minding their own business. This concept of self-determination is hard for many evangelicals to grasp, much less, to practice. Because at the end of the day, their tally of "souls saved" may somehow contribute to how big of a house they get in heaven. So, saving "innocent lives" becomes an agenda item to help them compensate for short comings in other areas. (Khem...like that secretary that the politician had an affair with, or that brooch that his wife stole)
Unfortunately, this means, that even though the govenment should in no way shape or form should be able to tell corporations that paying someone $3.00/hr is not enough for a person to live on, that man's wife's uterus is absolutely fair game for legislation against birth control, so that an innocent life can be brought about and not (shocked intake of breath) prevented through birth control. However, since Jesus taught self-reliance, you know, teach a man to fish in the Mississippi, what happens to that innocent life after it's born isn't the purview of anyone except the parents., who are now broke and are on welfare, but shouldn't be because that's socialism, and they should really just get a job begging on the side of the road.
This is where the Jews differ. Yes, it does take a village to raise a child and even though that might be somewhat socialistic, remember Jesus was a socialist as well. So the answers to the questions, in the opinion of most, but not all Jews, are the following:
1. A Fetus has no soul for appx 40 days after conception-therefore it is not alive until then. (Therefore, abortion is permitted until that time)
2. A baby in utero is only a potential life-until it is born. It's mother, however, is an established life.
3. Saving a life is the most important thing anyone can do, and sacrificing an existing life, for a potential life, is the greatest sin that anyone can commit.-This means that if keeping the baby will cause the mother grevious harm, including psychological, it is better to save the mother, than the fetus.
But most of this is semantics. However, if the evangelicals want to argue about G-d's will, in family planning, and accepting of his 'gifts' then, really, Viagra is against their religion. Because, isn't it ultimately His will that your plumbing NOT work?! And if it doesn't work, then you shouldn't be having sex, because obviously children won't result of your union any longer, and according to Santorum, procreative sex is all that a MAN should be having.......
So I submit to you Mr. Santorum, that if birth control is a matter of religious freedom of speech, that Viagra and similar drugs should also not be covered by religious institutions as well, because they are against G-d's plan for MAN (and his plumbing) and an affront to HIS WILL!!!!
